Maybe the ISI and the Pakistani military are finally coming to the conclusion that using Islamic militants to fight as proxies in Afghanistan and Kashmir is a bad idea.

But probably not, they are probably doing one more strategic withdrawal, giving up a few strategic assets now their price is too high and laying low for a bit. But they will start again a few years later.

Strengthening the Pakistani state may be the only reasonable option, but I'm skeptical of the likely outcome.

Excellent article, thought provoking and informative.

Your analysis worries me. For a while now, I've been trying to find a killer flaw in your argument. I haven't found one. It may be true that you're highlighting a worst-case scenario, but the trouble is that the worst case scenario is no longer that far fetched.

I for one, a seemingly rational man, am certainly getting more afraid of living in Karachi.

We are already witnessing a repeat of the mid-90s with plenty of Karachiites moving abroad. And I'm not just talking about those who have studied abroad and have chosen to not come back or return. A large majority of the recent graduating class at Karachi's premier medical school has applied for residency at hospitals in the US and UK. My neighbours, an elderly couple, who had returned to Pakistan 6 years ago after working for decades in the middle east are moving to the US.

Last night there were gun battles in Surjani Town and Azam Basti, near the outskirts of the city. The details are sketchy (where's the media?) but it is more than likely that the protagonists were the MQM and ANP. The MQM has been going on a quiet city-wide 'cleansing' mission, forcibly closing down Pathan 'hotels' and businesses and driving them to the outskirts of the city.
