I have to say I disagree with you on this one in terms of the whole ‘provocateur’ suggestion.

Firstly this isn’t the first time this has happened. It isn’t even uncharacteristic of the lawyers movement. Kasuri's face was spray painted black at point blank, and scalding hot daal was thrown on Naeem Bokhari's face. There are photographs of angry lawyers caning police vehicles on a number of occasions. Provocateurs were not involved then, and I strongly doubt they were involved here.

Secondly, it is important to remember that this is not the first time that jiyalas have been accused as masquerading as members of the lawyers movement. The last time the allegation was made, it came from Musharraf’s government, and was summarily dismissed.

Thirdly, the evidence cited in terms of the CJ's meeting with Zardari is pretty thin and circumstantial. I’m not saying that the possibility of what you’re suggesting should be ruled out, but the evidence put forward doesn’t make for a convincing case.

well said arif rafiq.
beyond the judges......?

there seems to be a feeling that all that needs to be done to bring about positive change in pakistan and institute a new era of truth, and justice for all is the reinstatement of former/current cjp, justice iftikhar.

what then? perhaps the newly formed demmer-critique gorr-munt will hand said cjp a magical 11-inch phoenix-feather wand, with which he will proceed to spell the doom of the dark forces who have taken over our benighted country.

ah... instant justice (4-all), no?

The shameful behavior of the lawyers makes a mockery of their claim that their movement is aimed at restoring "democracy" and "rule of law". It also raises questions about the readiness of Pakistani civil society to govern itself in a democratic manner. The conspiracy theories and the claims of "invisible hand" will not satisfy those of us looking for the facts. Unless there is full, impartial and apolitical investigation of this incident, this incident will be seen as part of a pattern of violence that has characterized the entire lawyers movement supported by politicians now in charge after the elections.
