Pakistan doesn't even understand the geopolitics of the region. Here's the situation. China's wants control over the Indian Ocean through Pakistan. Pakistan's air space is controlled by the US for obvious interests in the entire oil-rich region (under the name of fight against terrorism). If Pakistanis were really smart, there would be a revolution within Pakistan to join a secular Indian Union. What I don't understand is why both sides keep fighting over Kashmir when forming an Indian Union is of utmost importance given the geopolitics of the region.

Captainjohann, you're right that the Democrats have only recently began to assert a more substantively different Pakistan policy that the Bush administration. Whether it was possible or even in their interest to do so earlier is another story. I think the elections and overall political change in Pakistan have provided them with an opportunity to do so. It should also be noted that it's far easier for legislators to make more dramatic shifts than executive actors. But that assumes a will on the part of the Bush administration to actually change its course. Its major concern is continuity...whereas most Pakistanis tend to associate continuity, or the status quo, with a free fall toward disaster.

Rashad, in Egypt? Maybe in 20 years:-(

Thanks Arif, this is great to hear. Now if only they would do something like this for Egypt. I do like the precedent that it sets though.

What these socalled Democrats were doing the last 8 years? Is the present wisdom dawned on them only today?
These politicians from democratic party arre funded by the same chevrons and halliburtons to tell the truth to the AMERICAN PUBLIC.
They FEAR the revolution of Obama and want him to be in their payroll. This letter is directly related to the fight between Obama and clinton.
Americans never liked Democracy amongst its friends and allies. They were comfortable with marcos, suhartos, zias, ayubkhans,Saudi princes, etc
Already Musharaff is getting backing from China and Saudi arabia and USA is the sucker while the other two do it very cleverly.
